Dressing Aids for People with Arthritis

The ability to dress and undress oneself is an essential activity of daily living. Many individuals with limitations in hand dexterity, grasping, reaching, bending over as well as general weakness require some assistive device or accommodation to allow them to dress and undress. By altering some of their clothing and with the use of some assistive devices individuals with limitations can remain independent.

Socks & shoes

Sock aides are used to assist individuals in putting on socks and consist of a plastic section which the sock is put on and a rope attached to the plastic section to allow the person to pull the sock on.

Long-handle shoe horns give individuals assistance in putting on their shoes if they have difficulty bending over.

Elastic shoe laces come in a couple of different styles. One style allows the laces to be tied like a regular pair of shoes. The laces can then stretch to allow individuals to put on and take off their shoes without untying the laces. Another type of elastic shoe laces are called coilers and stay tight without the need to be tied.

Shoe removers allow individuals to easily remove their shoes.

Foot stools may also help individuals who have difficulty bending over as they raise the feet and may make them easier to reach.
Pants

Dressing sticks help individuals put on and take of pants and consist of a stick with a handle on one end and a hook on the other end.

A reacher may also be helpful and is like a long pair of tongs that are activated by a trigger. This can also be useful in picking up items from the floor or items that are high on a shelf and reduces the need for reaching or bending over.
Shirts

Button hooks assist individuals in buttoning/ unbuttoning shirts. They consist of a loop on a handle. To button the shirt the loop is placed through the button hole and around the button and then the button is pulled through the hole. To unbutton the shirt the same technique is used from the opposite side of the hole.

A zip grip or zip pull can be attached to shirt or coat zippers as well as pant zippers. They consist of a larger ring that is easily attached to zippers to make them easier to use for persons that cannot grasp a regular zipper.
